The term “high-functioning autism” is an informal label sometimes used to describe autistic people with lower support needs. It is not an official diagnosis, and many find it misleading or harmful. Functioning labels often focus on how someone appears on the outside, such as being able to attend school, work, or live independently while overlooking the internal effort, support, and energy this can require.
